Ultrasound Treatment/Therapy
Ultrasound is considered the best form of deep heat treatment for soft tissue injuries and it is used to treat joint and muscle sprains, bursitis, contracture, and tendonitis.
Ultrasound treatment is used to:
Ultrasound makes high frequency sound waves. The sound waves of therapeutic ultrasound vibrate tissues deep inside the injured area. This creates heat that draws more blood into the tissues and increases circulation. The tissues then respond to healing nutrients brought in by the blood and the repair process is aided.
Treatment is given with a sound head that is moved gently in strokes or circles over the injured area. The average treatment time is eight minutes for one area no more than twice the size of the sound head.
The procedure may be performed with the sound head alone in water or combined with a topical anti-inflammatory drug or gel outside of water; a conductive barrier is needed. The most common method is to use gel.
Ultrasound treatment is often used by physical therapists, sports trainers, animal rehabilitationists and many other healthcare providers. It is very safe and is never used around the eyes, ears, ovaries, testicles, or where there is an active infection. It is also not to be used where implants are cemented, as in the case of some hip replacements, so a practitioner should be familiar with the type of implants used prior to performing ultrasound therapy.
